CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY 1 - QSB 1514


This subject extends the subject Understanding Buildings to include larger scale building such as office blocks, high residential and mixed use buildings, shopping center, warehouses, factories and the like. The focus is on building systems and materials and it is intended to provide property and development us with a basic understanding of the materials and processes that are employed in the design and construction of larger buildings. The approach is based on the standard building element breakdown of structures. Value in buildings and how that is enhanced or reduced by choice of materials, design outcomes and construction methods is a central theme.



Learning Outcomes of this Subject

  • Understand the construction and structural principles and practice in the design and construction of medium and high rise building types.
  • Appreciate the various construction methods, systems and choices made in the design of various building types - shops, offices, industrial and high rise residential buildings.
  • Understand the performance, property management and maintenance requirements of the various elements within a range of building types.
  • Appreciate the creation and destruction of value by the choice of design construction and materials in buildings.
